We are so lucky to have a great family of franchisees here at Mess Around. Our franchisees are from a variety of backgrounds and each run fantastic sessions in their region. We will be sharing regular ‘behind the scenes’ perspectives from our team- starting with Kerry-Anne at Mess Around Edinburgh.
Name – Kerry-Anne McFarlane
What area do you cover? – Edinburgh
How long have you been a mess around owner? Just over a year
Do you have any messy children? I do! Patrick who is 3 and Ruaridh who is 14 months. They both absolutely love the events and are often the messiest.
What did you do before you had a career in spaghetti? I studied arts management, so worked freelance for a while on a variety of community arts projects. I have also worked in hospitality management.
When you’re not messing around, what do you enjoy doing? Running keeps me sane! I try to run a few times a week and I’ve just completed my second half marathon this year. I am also a community ambassador for the charity Bliss (Our eldest son was premature and Bliss are the premature and sick baby charity) so I try to fundraise for them at least a few times a year through various events and my running. And of course I love spending time with my family, my boys keep me very busy. And our 3 hens!
Why did you join Mess Around? I wanted a career I could build around my family and Mess Around has certainly offered this. I wanted to be my own boss, but being pregnant with my second child at the time, I didn’t know if I was crazy to take the risk. When I decided that buying a franchise was the best option I did a lot of research and Mess Around was the one that really stuck as it’s unlike any other children’s activity I had been to. I’m so grateful to be part of such a fantastic brand.
What’s been your messy highlight? To be honest, it’s been getting to know all the families that come back to our events every month. Seeing the children grow and seeing how much they get from our sessions is just amazing.
What’s your favourite messy material? I love gloop! It’s one of the worst materials to clean up but I just love it!
What messy plans do you have for the future? To bring mess around to more areas in Edinburgh and to hopefully start expanding our team.
What’s the best thing about being a Mess Around Franchisee? I love working for myself and having a job that I can fit around my family. I love seeing how happy the children are at our sessions.
What’s your favourite event? Spooktacular! There is nothing cuter than a baby dressed up as pumpkin, getting messy with pumpkin guts, or dressed up as a witch and eating mushy peas from a cauldron. I really love Supermess too!
What tips would you give to anyone looking to join the Mess Around Family? I would say that you get out of it what you put in. Embrace the chaos for the first few months whilst you find your feet because soon enough you will be in a great routine. Build good relationships with your venues and especially with regular customers. ENJOY your events! Take time to look at how much everyone is enjoying themselves, this is the culmination of all the work you have put into making the event great.
