Behind the scenes at Mess Around West Yorkshire
Today we hear from at Sarah from Mess Around West Yorkshire who joined the Mess Around family 3 year ago. We have a fantastic family of franchisees from a variety of backgrounds who all bring their unique experience to their messy play businesses.
Sarah shares a ‘behind the scenes’ perspective of her business below:
Name Sarah Tustin-Smith
The area you mess in? West Yorkshire
How long have you been a Mess Around owner? 3 years ago in December 2019
Do you have any messy children? Yes – Hannah, (age 6), she love’s the mess, and now she’s a little bit older she loves helping make all the activities for the sessions too! (3 kids – if you count Hannah, my Hubby and Monty the dog!!)
What did you do before you had a career in spaghetti? I was a store manager in retail – working with everything from skin products (body scrub is always messy!) kids toys (Disney!!) and a whole host or household gadgets (Swedish company), setting up new stores, recruiting and training new people to work in them, working lots of hours and not getting the work life balance I wanted!!
When you’re not messing around, what do you enjoy doing? Spending time with the family, days out exploring – and walking our dog Monty, who is also a messy specialist …..especially muddy puddles!!!
Why did you join Mess Around? I had been made redundant (again!) from my retail role, it’s tough out in high street retail these days, and Hannah was still little so I decided it was time to find something that I could do, that would allow me to spend lots of time with her as she’s growing up, and something that was lots of fun too!
What’s been your messy highlight so far? There’s been a few!! The first was the Birthday Bash we held for Crazy Soap – with around 100 kids and with it being only my 3rd ever event it was certainly a baptism into the world of mess!! (It took Krissy & I – 4 hrs to clear up!!) I loved the opportunity of doing Carfest North this summer……despite the rain and the mud, but best of all is seeing my little regulars as they grow!! I have quite a few now that started with me right back at the beginning and I just love seeing their smiling faces, enjoying the mess when they come along now!!
What’s your favourite messy material? Slime made with baby soap for the channels!! I love it when it squishes through your fingers!!
What messy plans do you have for the future? To keep spreading the messy ‘love’ and to grow my business, by starting to recruit some new team members in the not too distant future to help me do so!!
What’s the best thing about being a Mess Around franchisee? Being my own boss, working from home and around my family needs is awesome, but it’s also created some brilliant opportunities to get out there to meet some really lovely people and do some really fun & messy events!
What’s your favourite event?Life’s a Beach, and Spooktacular!
What tips would you pass onto anyone who is looking to join our Mess Around family? Do it!! I’m not going to lie, it is alot of hard work and people don’t realise the work that goes on behind the scenes. I’d say plan ahead, be open minded, expect the un-expected, learn some new skills (social media, running a business etc) BUT … most of all ….enjoy it!! It’s so much fun and SO rewarding seeing the little ones faces!! It’s defiantly a journey along one life’s amazing adventures!!
