From Miss Harrison to Miss Mess
Gemma Harrisons Story …
I’ve always enjoyed working with children and feel like I’ve come full circle since becoming part of the Mess Around’s messy play franchise team.
From Swansea to Prague
I trained as a primary school teacher and couldn’t wait to have my own class, after a year of teaching in Swansea I decided to broaden my horizons and accepted a job at a British School in Prague. I was a teacher in the Early Years and went on to become Head of Department. After 4 years of jam packed adventures, making new friends and gaining loads of experience I decided to leave Prague. I loved the city and my job but wanted to move home to be closer to my family.
Teaching in the UK just didn’t compare
When I came back to Swansea teaching in the UK just didn’t compare to Prague, so I decided to change my career path. I became an NVQ assessor, delivering Childcare and Play work qualifications to staff working in schools, nurseries, playgroups. I thoroughly enjoyed my role as it meant I could impart my knowledge and skills to help others gain a qualification in the childcare sector.
She turned our world up side down
In 2017 our first child was born and, as every parent will tell you, she turned our world completely upside down! I planned to work part-time as I still wanted a career, but also time at home with my family. After 6 months I was all geared up to return to work when I had an epileptic seizure – it was very mild but meant I couldn’t drive for a year, so I had to step down from my role.
I was at a loss and didn’t know where my career would take me from here, I thought about going back into teaching and did some supply work but I felt I needed a new challenge, something to get my teeth into whilst being able to spend as much time with my family as possible.
This is the job for me!
When I saw the opportunity to join the Mess Around team on Facebook I thought “that job description has been written for me!” Straightaway I could picture myself in a room full of messy activities with children having the time of their lives – how much fun would that be?!
Mess Around Swansea had been running successfully for just over a year when the owners decided to step down. When I enquired to find out more my gut feeling told me this is definitely for you! I’ve had lots of help and support from Krissy our MD and the team, I’ve got lots to learn, but I’m going to embrace this opportunity I’ve been given.
This is just the beginning of my journey and I’m excited to use my teaching experience to provide messy activities that make learning fun.
Gemma hosted her first launch event on Sunday 14th October in Pontardawe Leisure Centre with over 50 children attending. The event was a huge success and she’s off to a flying start.
