Rice, Rice Baby!

Dried rice offers hours of sensory play and is always a big hit at our Messy Play Sessions. Everyone joins in with the messy fun from tiny tots to big kids (and sometimes even the parents)! Read on to discover how easy it is to transform a simple packet of plain dried rice into exciting sensory activities for your little one to enjoy at home.

Let the rice fun begin…

Step into Spring

Kids love playing with colourful Spring rice at our Eggstravaganza Easter Parties! With our guidance you can make your own colourful Spring rice so that your little one can enjoy messy rice fun at home this Easter.

What you’ll need

All you need is a packet of rice, some food colouring and either vinegar or hand sanitiser – that’s it! Oh – and a mixing bowl and baking tray.

When you’re ready, just place the rice, food colouring and vinegar (or hand sanitiser) in a mixing bowl and give it a really good mix. Once you’re happy that all the grains of rice are covered, spread it out on a baking tray and leave it to dry.

How easy is that? Now repeat the process for each colour of rice that you want to make. We made five colours for this rainbow rice play scene:

We’ve made you an easy video walk through to show you how to make it:

Time to play

Once your colourful Spring rice is dry, the fun can begin. Give your little one some toys such as plastic spoons, forks, funnels, cups, eggs, tea sets, trucks or any other suitable play items to encourage creative and imaginative play.

They can pour it, scoop it, shake it, spread it or just enjoy the feel of it running through their little fingers as they try to grasp it in their hands. They can play with each colour separately, or they can mix all the colours. Just let them dive in and enjoy hours of make-believe fun!

Top tip: When your little one has finished playing you can store your colourful rice in an air-tight container ready for messy play another day. It lasts for ages!

Ready for a Ruff, Ruff rescue?

If your little one is a messy play adventurer who loves Paw Patrol, then they will love our Messy Mutz Party in May! Until then they can create their very own Paw Patrol doggie play scene at home.

Just make up some colourful rice, then add their Paw Patrol toys, funnels, scoops, dog bowls and bones for lots of pooch adventures at home.
