December is finally here!
… Which means the Christmas countdown has officially kicked off here at Mess Around Nottingham! We take our holidays seriously and are very strict when it comes to celebrating festivities, so at home we only allow Christmas trees to be up and festive jumpers to be worn as from 1st December (we don’t allow trick or treating in March either!)… But the wait is so worth it as we have a whole month of sparkles, lights, smiles, shopping, wrapping and then unwrapping presents, great food and treats, Father Christmas visits, a lot of happiness, but most importantly a fabulous festive atmosphere that only our Messy Christmas parties can bring to you!
Here at Mess Around Nottingham we love our crafts! They are fun, perfect for cold and gloomy weather and they get all the family involved, so crafting is the perfect way to spend some lovely cosy and fun family times indoors! And why not create something that you can give to family and friends this Christmas as a memento and a lovely keepsake of your little one’s childhood, or even decorate your Christmas tree with some super cute hand-made ornaments entirely produced by your child(ren)?
Here is a super easy Salt Dough recipe to follow! All you need is a mixing bowl or large container, your favourite Christmas cookie cutters, a pin roller, baking trays, baking paper, a straw and these ingredients, which if you are lucky you already have in your cupboard, but otherwise they are very cheap to procure from any supermarket:
• 1 cup of salt
• 2 cups of flour
• ¾ cup of water
The steps to follow…
Now you have all your ingredients and utensils measured and ready, all you need to do is the following:
1. Mix salt and flour in your container.
2. Add the water and mix well until a paste / dough is formed.
3. Knead the mix with your hands – this works better on a flat surface.
4. If the dough is too sticky you can add a little bit of flour to get the right consistency. If extremely dry then try adding a few drops of water at the time until you are happy with your mix.
5. Use your pin roller to flatten the dough.
6. Use your cookie cutters to create your ornaments!
7. Stick a straw on the top of each shape to cut out a little circle, which will be useful to attach a ribbon through your ornament and be able to hang it later on.
8. Cover the baking tray with baking paper and place your little creations on top.
Once you have your little creations on the trays they can either be placed in the oven at 180 degrees (Celsius) or you can leave them to airdry. However, in the winter they can take a long time to dry fully on their own, so the oven may work a lot better for you (and it is quicker as well!). The time to be left in the oven varies depending on thickness, size and each oven as such, but you can check your ornaments’ progress every 5-10 minutes. When dry, you can just use normal ready-mix paint for crafts, add glitter, sequins or use any other craft materials you have at hand at home – plenty of fun and room to use your imagination to make your ornaments extra special! Don’t forget to share photos of your creations with us as we love seeing the results!
