Handprint memories – Fun activities at home – Mess Around Renfrewshire and Inverclyde
I’ve been inspired by all the wonderful things I’ve been seeing online, especially all the fun things you can create with flour! Lots of colourful, creative objects. I decided to give the handprint salt dough ornament a go!
What you will need:
500 grams of plain flour
300 grams of salt
How we did it:
We started by putting the oven on to the lowest heat. We then poured the flour into a bowl, then added in the salt and mixed It together. We then added some water and mixed it up (this part was very messy for us as mini mess maker decided to create her own also), then added water and mixed until you get a doughy consistency.
We then put some flour on the worktop to stop the dough sticking and rolled the dough out to a size that will fit all your hands. You can make it any shape and size you like, or even use a cutter. Once it was all rolled out, we placed it onto a baking tray.
Then the fun part! Take your hand and press it into the dough, do the same for each person. Then pop it in the oven until it goes hard. I had mine in the oven for 7 hours but I don’t think you will need it in so long, the recommended time is 4 hrs. Make sure the bottom is solid, once its done take it out and leave it to cool.
We then got our painting gear on and had fun painting, we started by painting it yellow as a base colour (only as a bit of it was burnt ha ha ) and when that was all dry we went on to paint our own hands our favourite colours.
Even after all our mishaps we think the result is amazing. Its such a lovely reminder of our time spent together and our close bond we all share as a family unit.
If you give it a try please share as I would love to see your wonderful creations. Have fun!
